This is the allegorical representation of the classical Christian story of Satan tempting Jesus in the desert. Besides the interesting composition stripped of the redundant details the interesting thing is that the two protagonists look alike, as if they were brothers (which in fact they are, if we suppose that their creator is the same). The two opposite poles of the same cosmic principle, yin and yang, representing totality on the basis of division, experience on the basis of negation, light defined by the absence of dark and vice versa; this is a human condition. If we define world in terms of opposite pairs where one defines the other, what direct experience can be possible?
